Dedicated website launched for Southend pier

October 27, 2020

A new website dedicated to Southend pier has been launched to provide information on the history of the pier, upcoming events and raise the profile of our most famous visitor icon.

The website has been set up to give some insight into the history of Southend pier with the aim of increasing local knowledge on the town’s world-famous pier.

The site will show information on upcoming events such as the popular Santa on the pier event which starts again in a few weeks. There will be news items and pictures of the pier through the years and other promotions.

Plans are also in place to develop links to webcams showing the views from a mile and a third out to sea and an online booking system for visitors to pre-book their trips to the world’s longest pleasure pier. Information regarding these links will be shared once they are in operation.

Cllr Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for business, culture and tourism, said: “Creating a new website is something I have been keen to see completed. We have a developing offer on the pier and it rightly deserves a dedicated website to give residents and visitors a plethora of information regarding the pier and its history.

“We have worked closely with local experts to create a ‘history of the pier’ section, which details all the changes this iconic landmark has seen since its construction in 1830.

“We have invested heavily in the pier recently, with money being spent on structural repairs, and also the exciting plans to replace the pier trains with new, eco-friendly trains, which are set to be in place for Spring 2021.

“I hope both residents and visitors find the new site useful. Whilst we have all had an extremely challenging year, pier visitor numbers have shown confidence in the attraction with September numbers higher than last year. Even through the difficult times we find ourselves in, people are still keen to visit the pier and I would remind evertone that the pier is open every day over the half term period.”
