Snow wardens wanted for the nitty-gritty of winter roads
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council are offering free gritting equipment to the first 100 people who attend the Council’s new salt depot on Saturday 18 November and sign the Snow Warden’s pledge.
The packs, which include salt grit, snow shovels and high-visibility jackets, will be available for collection from 9am to 3pm at the new salt depot in Short Street, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 5BY. Staff will be on hand to distribute the supplies to residents who have proof of an address within the Borough.
Cllr Tony Cox, Executive Councillor for Transport, Waste and Regulatory Services, said: “With winter fast approaching, the roads will become increasingly un-safe, so it is important we protect our roads and pavements as much as possible.
“We monitor the weather and road temperatures daily to ensure gritters are always ready and waiting to grit the main routes.
“Snow wardens are on hand to assist within their local community, making roads and pavements safe for residents to travel.
“We are hopeful that individuals with their community in mind will sign up, make the pledge and help out in the harsher winter months.”
Snow warden’s pledge to:
Use their supplies for the benefit of the wider community
Adhere to the Council’s advisory information sheet ‘The Snow Code’
Provide their e-mail address to receive Council updates and provide confirmation of community activity they have undertaken
Check and report on local salt grit bins that need refilling
To express an interest in becoming a snow warden, please call Veolia on 0203 567 6955 or email uk.southend-on-sea@veolia.com.
